STEP ONE
I sometimes wonder why people tell their stories . . . . and why other folks read those stories. We all lead the lives we have selected; sometimes we’re on foot, sometimes on wheels. But whether we like it or not, we’re leading our way and others are sometimes interested in our lives.
Franny and I are beginning a new adventure. First we’ll fly from SF to Miami for an introduction to the everglades. Then head out to Ecuador to explore the highlands and rainforests and end our adventures in Peru with Amazon jungles, Andes acclimatization, and a hike to Machu Picchu; all over 3 ½ months.
When I was a boy I learned how to enter a cold mountain 6 a.m. pool. I cupped and doused that cold mountain water over my limbs, my shoulders and my chest. Then I entered the water, dropping down the side wall of the pool . . . without making a sound . . . to make my way to . . . . the other side. All this activity was accomplished to conquer a personal challenge and to test my ability to control myself and endure a bit of natural shock and pain.
Fifty-two years later I find different ways to challenge myself, still cupping my hands and dousing myself; now testing and challenging myself to live each of my days as fully as I can stand to take (much the opposite of the shock and pain challenges in my youth).
Over the past six years Franny and I have cupped our simple’ glamping’ lifestyle over our limbs, shoulders and chests. We’re now ready to accept a new sort of fullness in our days. We are entering our new adventure, feeling prepared for the changes.
